Made to Measure Display Cabinet

Do you have trouble finding a display cabinet that suits the individual needs of your collection? Perhaps you have models or specimens which are unusually shaped – or perhaps you simply have a clear mental vision of exactly what the perfect cabinet should look like. Either way, ordering a Made-to-Measure Display Cabinet could be the answer.
Many customer send us pictures of how they use their custom made display cabinets. Looking for inspirations? Then you might like to visit our Customer Gallery.

Prices for a custom cabinet begin at €23, and vary according to the size and features you are looking for. Best of all, there’s no need to wait to find out how much your dream case will cost! By using our customisation tool, you can calculate the exact price and, if you’re satisfied, add it straight to your shopping cart so that we can begin making it for you as soon as possible.

SOME HINTS:

  • When you are using the customisation tool, please remember that all measurements are in centimetres.
  • Due to the nature of acrylic panels, some combinations of dimensions (eg. a casbinet which is 75cm tall and 75cm wide) are not possible. Making cabinets with these combinations would be very likely to result in breakages, which of course we work hard to avoid. Other combinations are possible, but may result in a different shipping option being used (our standard shipping option can only handle packages of certain sizes). If you select a combination of dimensions that could cause problems, an error message will appear. You may then adjust your chosen dimensions so that you can go ahead and order right away.
  • If you have any questions or problems, please feel free to write an e-mail us on info@sorashowcases.com and one of our friendly staff members will be able to help you out.
Custom Display Cabinet with Fantasy Models

Step One: Decide how many shelves you want, and select that number from the drop-down box.

Step Two: Decide how many columns you want, and select that number from the drop-down box. This shows how many compartments each shelf will be divided into. For example, if you select 1 column, then there will be no divider in each shelf. If you select two columns, each shelf will be divided in half, and so on.

Step Three: Decide whether you want your cabinet with or without a front panel, and select the appropriate response from the drop down box. Adding a front panel costs a little extra, but will help protect your collection from visitors, children and pets.

Step Four: Choose the type of back panel you would like for your cabinet: transparent, reflective or black. Think carefully, because this will affect the appearance of your display. You may like to look at the sample pictures provided on this website to get an idea of what the different back panel options look like.

Step Five: Decide how wide you want your cabinet to be, and select the appropriate number from the drop down called ‘Width (Outside)’. Then, select how tall you want your cabinet to be, and select the appropriate number from the drop down called ‘Height (Outside).

Step Six: Decide how deep you want your cabinet to be, and select the appropriate number from the drop down called ‘Depth (Inside) ’.

Step Seven: Click on ‘Calculate Now’ to produce a list of the specifications for your custom cabinet. If there is a problem with something you have entered, an error message will appear, explaining what you need to do to fix it. If everything is fine, you will see a summary which includes the dimensions of your cabinet, the number of shelves and compartments it will contain, and the price.

Step Eight: If you are ready to order, go ahead and click on ‘Add to Shopping Cart’, then click on ‘My Shopping Cart’ to review postage costs and check out. Alternatively, you are welcome to adjust settings as many times as you like until you find the custom cabinet that perfectly suits your needs.

Step Nine: We will build your cabinet and ship it to you in approximately five working days. It will arrive as an easy-to-assemble kit (with illustrated instructions included) and requires no tools or adhesives to put together.

And remember: If you have any difficulties in the course of ordering a custom cabinet, just email us on info@sorashowcases.com We’re always happy to help!

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Connector System close-up

You can choose between different designs of the back-panel (black, transparent or reflective) as well as you can order your individual showcase with or without a front-panel. The number of shelves as an input field means how many horizontal layers your rack is supposed to have, whereas the number of columns equals the number of vertical units.

The total number of shelves as a result of your inputs (number of shelves * number of columns) will be displayed below the input fields of the construction tool. All custom display cabinets are based on the proprietary sora connector system. They are delivered as an easy to build up construction kit. The parts of the construction-kit are joined with acrylic splines. Therefore you won't need any additional tools or adhesives to build up your rack. For further information about the construction principle of the display cabinet, please check our construction manual.

EXAMPLES

1. Acrylic rack with 8 shelves and 1 column

Example 8 Shelves 1 Column

The single-columns version of an acrylic rack can be designed with a maximum width of 30 cm if the input for 'depth' is not more than 7 cm. If both measurements exceed these limits the shelves, there is the danger of the shelves bending in the middle if you put a heavier item on it. Therefore the online configuration tool will display an error message and suggest to either reduce the width of the cabinet, reduce the depth below 7 cm, or to insert an additional column.

2. Acrylic rack with 3 shelves and 3 columns

Example 3 Shelves 3 Columns

3. Acrylic rack with 6 shelves and 3 columns

Example 6 Shelves 3 Columns

FRONT PANEL

Connector System close-up

The front-panel is made of crystal-clear 3 mm thick transparent acrylic and can be attached to the rack by hook-mounting. The side-panels of the rack have acrylic hooks, which are designed to hold the front-panel. If you order your display cabinet without a front-panel, the side panels will have no mounting hooks.

ERROR MESSAGES

If a certain combination of settings is not possible, the online configuration tool will display one or more error messages. Please change the settings of your acrylic display cabinet according to the error messages.

What material are the cabinets made of?

What material are the cabinets made of?

Our custom display cabinets are made from acrylic glass. It's scientific name is PMMA, but you might also know it under one of it's many brand names: Plexiglas, Lucite, Acrylite or Perspex. The transparent side-panels and shelves of the case are made from 4mm strong acrylic glass. The back-panel and the optional clear front-panel are made from 3mm strong acrylic glass.
I know some plastics deteriorate under sunlight. Is this a problem with acrylic glass?
I know some plastics deteriorate under sunlight. Is this a problem with acrylic glass?
No, in contrast to most other plastics, acrylic glass has the advantage that it neither gets brittle nor yellow from the exposure to UV rays. You can keep your display cabinet under direct sunlight for many years without having to expect any change in the material quality.
Can I buy an LED lighting system for my cabinet directly from you?

Can I buy an LED lighting system for my cabinet directly from you?

Unfortunately we cannot offer any LED lighting systems. We are personally very enthusiastic about this subject and you will find many pictures in our customer gallery where customers installed LED stripes inside their display cabinets. It's an interesting subject but it goes too far beyond our area of expertise.
What do you mean by "shelves" and "columns"?

What do you mean by "shelves" and "columns"?

I know these terms can be a bit confusing. Here is the analogy I always use to explain the principle: Have you worked with a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel before? If you have then you probably remember that the worksheet is presented in a grid layout that is organized in rows and columns.
Our naming for the custom display cabinets is very similar. If you select 2 columns then this means your cabinet will have two usable compartments (or "cells") next to each other, divided by one central divider. If you select 3 columns then there will be 3 units next to each other and two dividers that separate the 3 single compartments.
Similarly our term "shelves" is the equivalent to "rows" in a spreadsheet programm. If you select 3 shelves then you will have 3 compartments on top of each other divided by two horizontal dividers.
To put all of this together: If you select a cabinet with 3 columns and 2 shelves then the number of single compartments (or "cells") will be 3 x 2 = 6.
Can I order my cabinet based on dimensions in inches?
Can I order my cabinet based on dimensions in inches?
Our configuration tool uses centimetres as input variables but you can easily translate the inch dimensions you require into centimetres.
Just remember 1 inch = 2.54 cm. You can actually write your dimensions with up to one decimal, so if you would like an outside width of 10 inches, you could write 25.4 cm instead.
We can only produce with 1/10 of a centimetre precision, so if your "translated" centimetre value has two decimals, please round the result to one decimal.
I want to wall-mount my custom cabinet. How does that work?

I want to wall-mount my custom cabinet. How does that work?

Your custom display cabinet will come with two small keyhole shaped cut-outs in the back panel.
This way you can safely attach your cabinet to a set of wall-fixings (for example a pair of wall-plugs and screws).
Pro tip: Use the back-panel as a template to mark to holes for your wall fixings before you assemble the cabinet!
What if any part of my display cabinet breaks - can I get replacements from you?

What if any part of my display cabinet breaks  - can I get replacements from you?

One big advantage of our construction principle is that you don't need to buy a whole new display cabinet if there is a little accident. Most of the time it's only one or two parts that need to be replaced. If that happens, please get in touch with us.
We can provide any replacement part for any product that you ordered from us in the past. This is also true for customized products.
You can be certain that we do not take advantage of any misfortunes. Replacement parts for customized products are therefore priced very moderately.
Help, my display cabinet parts look blue/green/scratched!
Help, my display cabinet parts look blue/green/scratched!
Don't worry! What you are seeing is just a protective foil.
All acrylic parts are coated with a protective foil on both side (except for acrylic mirrors, which are only coated on the front). This protective foil is very important to make sure that the acrylic parts don't get scratched or messy during
manufacturing and shipping. This foil can be blue, green, white or simply translucent and you will often find scratches on it.
Since it is very tight on the acrylic, it is easy to miss at first glance and you might assume that the parts of your cabinet are scratched or of a totaly different colour.
However, once you remove the foil, you should find the acrylic underneath to be crystal clear and flawless.
Help, I have trouble removing the protective foil!

Help, I have trouble removing the protective foil!

On rare occasion we receive a production batch of acrylic glass where the protective foil is especially tight on the acrylic material.
Fingernails are always the first weapon of choice. Don't worry, acrylic is pretty scratch-resistant. You won't be able to scratch the acrylic underneath the foil with your fingernails. It's best to start in one of the corners and scratch with your fingernail until the foil starts to come off. This will do the trick 99% of the time.
If everything else fails, you might try to lift the foil in one of the corners very carefully with the help of a small coin or knife.
